‘…What exactly are the policies of the Coalition, and would they work? After all, there’s been plenty of media scrutiny of the Government’s carbon tax. There’s been precious little on the Opposition’s own carbon policy, which it calls “Direct Action”, or the many sweeping statements on climate change and the carbon tax by Tony Abbott…
The take-home message is simple. The Coalition’s plan is based on incomplete science, dubious economics and breath-taking political expediency. It will be hugely expensive. It won’t cut carbon emissions. It won’t even lead to lower taxes. And it will still introduce a shadow price for carbon…’

An extraordinary event took place in Washington, D.C. this past weekend.

Over 10,000 young people came together for Power Shift 2011 — a 3-day conference to train, organize, and mobilize for climate action in the United States. The US has been an obstacle to climate action for years, so seeing the power and energy of the young people together was one of the most hopeful moments for the climate movement in quite some time.

It was an amazing event: there were inspiring talks from Van Jones and Al Gore, workshops on local solutions, and even a mass march against big polluters in the streets of Washington DC.

But there is one highlight from the weekend you truly need to see: the speech from Bill McKibben, which energized a crowd 10,000 people-strong. Watch the video of this incredible talk:

Do We Want To raise Our Consciousness?
From what I am reading and listening to we seem to be at a pivotal point in our evolution. The scientists are saying it, the “spiritual gurus” are saying it, my friends are saying it and in case we haven’t noticed it, THE PLANET IS SAYING IT!

A month ago, as news-desks readied their stories of a protest against climate action, we joined with our friends in the climate movement to hold our first rally in support of a price on pollution. That night, the news told the story of 250 angry voices against a price on pollution being dwarfed by 8,000 peaceful Australians who gathered down the street in favour of real climate action.

This action spurred rallies across the country in the weeks that followed.

Every time the climate deniers have tried to rewrite the story about what the community actually thinks about climate change, we have been there, with thousands of others, to prove them wrong.

Since that first rally, together we’ve:

  • Held massive rallies which have mobilised over 20,000 people to say ‘YES’ to a price on pollution, outnumbering the other side every time, often with less than a week’s notice;
  • Put the shock jocks on notice with formal complaints about their misinformation;
  • Mobilised people on the ground in key electorates like those of independent MPs - including a rally in Port Macquarie that outnumbered a rally held by climate deniers by a factor of twenty to one;
  • Started developing some great ad campaigns to ensure we’ll be ready when the big polluters try to take over the airwaves; and
  • Commissioned investigative research to expose how big polluters are underhandedly trying to cripple climate action.
Some of the nation’s most well-resourced and well-connected are throwing everything they have at attempts to prevent action on climate change. But our strategy - to build power in numbers - is already working: at each turn, we’re winning the on-the-ground battle of who can mobilise more people.

The fight for our future is far from over. That’s why we’re working to bring you new tools to help fight myths on talkback and in the papers, great ad campaigns to break through the misinformation of climate change deniers, and more family friendly rallies planned over the coming months.

Watch our video of what we’ve achieved through our community-funded climate fighting fund so far…

Floods are a real bugger. But with the right preparations they can become part of everyday life. This is just as well, because in the future floods probably will be. Leave it alone and let H.G. Nelson and Professor Amanda Keller make floods fun again…

Finally, some climate change humour!…here’s a pilot for ‘The Steaming Toad’, an online series looking for TV production by HG Nelson.

In harmony with the Tao,
the sky is clear and spacious,
the earth is solid and full,
all creatures flourish together,
content with the way they are,
endlessly repeating themselves,
endlessly renewed.

When man interferes with the Tao,
the sky becomes filthy,
the earth becomes depleted,
the equilibrium crumbles,
creatures become extinct.

The Master views the parts with compassion,
because he understands the whole.
His constant practice is humility.
He doesn’t glitter like a jewel
but lets himself be shaped by the Tao,
as rugged and common as stone.

Tao Te Ching

‘…The fact is that everywhere people are making choices to directly harm others by polluting the environment. The psychologisation of environmental pollution serves as a smokescreen for the abuse and neglect of the natural world. Social, cultural and psychological factors all involve the choices of individual people. In this case the choice of each of us to continue to consume and to pollute.

It is a choice to abdicate responsibility. Many of us choose to deny unpleasant truths and this is an action — not simply a reaction…’
