New website that aims to pool all US public government data into a single semantic web application. Still in early stages, but you can type in a ZIP code and view information about employment levels & relocation rates for particular area. You can also even see a list of nearby factories & info about all the dangerous chemicals they emit, by weight.

Urban Mobs used freely available SMS data to create a visualisation of text messages sent in Paris on New Year’s Eve.

You can notice the gradual build up to midnight, at which point Paris explodes! Well, sorta.

I would like to say I appreciate this because it’s quite clever, but really… I just like sparkly things :)

What did you do this weekend? Ozan, Rob, (and Scott from home!), Jezza, and I spent our weekend hacking at the Open Australia Hackfest - “Mashup Australia” edition. We’ll be making the finishing touches over the next week ready to enter into the Government 2.0 Taskforce Mashup Australia competition.
The aim of the competition is to show what we can do with government data, whether it’s a visualisation, and application, or improving data sets so that they are in a better format for others to reuse.
We want more openness and transparency government, open data is a nice step in that direction.
